REVIEW
The plot, and any attempt at describing The Cell, sounds quite tired. A psychologist (Lopez) must enter the mind of a serial killer (D'Onofrio) to find a dying victim (Silence of the Lambs); she does this by infiltrating his dream state (Dreamscape), and must learn to control this false reality (The Matrix). Knowing all that, it's all the more incredible to find how original this thriller is. Breathtaking stream-of-conciousness sequences through a tense carnival-of-horrors fantasy world are the highlight of this trippy film destined for cult status. With bizarre violence and an experimental technique, director Singh is superficially reminiscent of David Fincher, but this big-screen debut is full of hope and lacks Fincher's nihilistic tendencies. A music video director (R.E.M.'s "Losing My Religion"), Singh shows he can sustain his vision; armed with a more substantial script, not even the sky would be his limit.
