Lucky Numbers

Suggested by an actual incident which happened in the 1980s, Lucky Numbers is a peculiar, ultimately unsuccessful blend of screwball and dark comedy that never quite finds its groove. Set in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, the story follows colorful TV weatherman Travolta and lotto ball-girl Kudrow, who in-between their romantic trysts concoct a scheme to rig the state lottery. Director Ephron (who helmed Travolta in Michael, one of his weaker outings) and writer Adam Resnick (Cabin Boy, 'nuf said) attempt to milk greed, betrayals and killings for wacky laughs, but unappealing characters and uneven pacing only weigh down what little amusing moments the film has.
