A mature tale of an underdog (Nicholson) who finally has his day when the bite of a wolf causes him to develop distinctly lupine properties. He soon rids himself of his cheating wife (Nelligan) and slimy best friend (Spader) and begins a steamy affair with an exquisitely icy "poor little rich girl" (Pfeiffer) just as a spate of gruesome killings befalls the city. Nicholson and Pfeiffer wear their roles like a pair of comfortable slippers, and Spader makes full use of his stock-in-trade creepiness. However, this is not the gorefest horror fans may be anticipating, and the dime-store special effects are bound to disappoint. But Nicholson's wry, arch performance is a true howl and a return to irreverent form.
