REVIEW
A swaggering, highly stylized and pulsating cinematic ride, Trainspotting is an in-your-face adaptation of Irvine Welch's novel and play about life among a merry band of heroin addicts living it up in the lower depths of Edinburgh. Refreshingly unrepentent in tone, director Boyle puts a fun-filled spin on the world of skag as seen through the eyes of its narrator, Renton (McGregor). He's a wiry and likable antihero who takes up residence in a squalid squat with a group of fellow travellers that comprise the film's core cast of wackos. As much as it explores the drug subculture, Trainspotting is also a merciless social critique that ultimately eyes the pursuit of happiness through substance as the moral equal to that of material acquisition. Sheer excitement, it's punctuated nicely by a hip, drug-inspired rock soundtrack.
