Singleton's powerful directorial debut is a brilliant examination of the crises facing young black men in the '90s, as well as a searing indictment of the culture of violence which holds sway in American ghettoes today. Set in the rough-and-tumble of South Central Los Angeles, the film tells the story of three black teens who face the unrelenting, and often deadly, realities of urban life. Singleton successfully avoids stereotyping his three heroes as inner-city misfits and instead portrays them as average American youth caught in an untenable situation.
