FROM THE LINER NOTESA hip, darkly comic, on-the-road tale about a young woman who has an unfortunate encounter with a figurative big, bad wolf while hitching a ride to grandma's house to escape her abusive family.
REVIEW
Witherspoon is a revelation as Venessa, a white-trash gal with morals, guts and spunk who gets into a load of trouble when she decides to visit her grandmother. This darkly funny indy -- written and directed by Bright -- features the often miscast Sutherland as Bob, a demented psychologist who picks up the stranded Vanessa on the highway. But is he a notorious serial rapist/murderer, or just a horny guy who gets kinky with a hot teen in his car? Well, Witherspoon doesn't wait for the 6:00 News to find out and her decision leads to violence, revelations and a manhunt. Funny, vicious and quite unusual (the body count is surprisingly high). A real find. The supporting cast is great, especially Plummer as the druggie prostitute mom and Shields as an oh-so-perfect bitch.
