Liotta delivers a gritty and charismatic performance as a young mob functionary in this based-on-fact, superbly crafted and high-energy look at the rise and fall of a mob insider. The film brilliantly illustrates the seduction of Liotta's early initiations, the headiness of his status as "goodfella" and the hellishness of his inevitable fall from grace. As Liotta's cold-blooded comrades, De Niro and especially Oscar-winner Pesci are mesmerizing; and Bracco sparkles as Liotta's tough-as-nails wife. Scorsese has created a modern masterpiece, as well as one of the finest gangster movies of all time.
