REVIEW
Recalling the UFO paranoia/hysteria of those 1950s sci-fi films -- the classic and cheesy, alike -- in which dastardly aliens set out to destroy our benign planet, Independence Day is the ultimate us vs. them sci-fi encounter, boasting great special effects, a plausible story line, more laughs than anyone would have a right to expect, and a top-notch cast obviously enjoying themselves. Combining many plots and characters who all come together by story's end, the film's fun starts when several giant spaceships hover over Earth's major cities. As the president, the military and scientists engage in speculation, it soon becomes clear these aliens are no E.T.s. Star Wars may be slicker, and Close Encounters more visionary, but there's no denying Independence Day is a blast.
