REVIEW
Bringing the same stylish chills he brought to Cronos, director Del Toro unleashes a steady stream of scares in this very good-looking, level-headed horror tale. Due to an untreatable virus passed on by cockroaches, the children of New York City are dying in increased numbers. Entomologist Sorvino creates a mutated roach that eventually kills them off. But a few years later, the genetically engineered bug, which was supposed to die out in months, has evolved into a human-sized and very deadly adversary. Mimic, much like The Relic, another fun and scary pulse-pounder from 1997, takes a group of scientists and bystanders and pits them, in a confined space, against an unknown and elusive monster, here terrorizing the catacombs of the New York City subway system. Unlike many a horror film, children are not necessarily off limits; and thankfully there is no saving of the dog -- it too is roach food.
