Don't expect to be frightened out of your wits with an unrelenting barrage of horror sequences. Sommers' Mummy doesn't go there. Borrowing a little derring-do from Raiders of the Lost Ark and some off-hand humor from Gunga Din, this update of the 1930s chestnut is cheesy fun, down to its hackneyed screenplay, great special effects and mix of humor, action and scares. Fraser leads librarian Weisz and her ne'er-do-well brother Hannah to the lost city of Hamunaptra, where Egypt's rich and powerful of the B.C. are buried. Unwittingly, they let loose the spirit of a 3,000-year-old mummy, who plans to conquer the world as soon as he regenerates. It's the humans vs. the living dead as the mummy uses some nasty tricks (bugs, sandstorms, undead, more bugs) in his battle for control. It's the sort of film in which every 10 minutes or so our hapless heroes find themselves in another inescapable predicament. It's fun to watch them weasel out of them.
