REVIEW
This somewhat moody crime drama features Macy as a hit man with a heart of gold who considers getting out of the business, much to the consternation of his mentor and boss -- his father (Sutherland). Macy is Alex. Despite his profession, he's a somewhat mild-mannered mid-lifer who (in a nod to Tony Soprano) seeks the help of a therapist (Ritter). In the waiting room he meets Sarah (Campbell), a free-spirited youngster that sets his middle-aged heart aflutter and sends his life into deeper turmoil. So, though he has a lovely wife at home (Ullman) and a fine young son who adores him, Alex begins the journey that so many fortysomething men do and pursues his boyish passions -- including rebellion against Dad. Director Bromell (who got his start writing for TV's "Homicide") sets everything on edge and a slightly surreal Stepford Wives tone permeates, which at times feels just right and at others feels off. Sutherland gives another one of his grand, patronly performances as an overbearing dad who may have gone just one step too far with junior.
