Oh, the horror of it all. Director Wainwright takes an intriguing story of supernatural possession and religious conflict and turns it into a boring, atmospheric merry-go-round ride. Byrne plays a Vatican priest who is sent to Pittsburgh (now that's scary) to investigate a young woman (Arquette) who is experiencing signs of the stigmata, or unexplained wounds mirroring those suffered by Christ. With one-too many jump cuts and not-nearly enough scares, the story follows the good reverend as he tries to protect his lovely charge -- but from what? The film's good look can't hide a silly screenplay and uninvolving direction.
