By not appearing in a project, Keanu Reeves may have made the smartest decision of his career by saying "no" to reprising the role of Jack Traven from Speed for its sequel. Bullock, however, is not that lucky. She returns in this waterlogged, empty-headed encore, this time set on a cruise ship. She's got a new boyfriend (Patric, who couldn't show less emotion if he were dead), and once again she crosses paths with a mad bomber (the bug-eyed Dafoe). Everything there was to like about the original is absent this second time around. Suspense? None. Excitement? Gone. Unpredictable thrills? Stick to the original. A clever villain? Watch Die Hard again. Director De Bont had too much money, too much control, and too few ideas.
