This unabashedly sentimental, wildly cinematic story was filmed in Northern Ireland and features Miles as a young girl who marries a simple, plodding schoolteacher (Mitchum) only to have an affair with a British soldier (Jones). As directed by Lean, the film is brisk and stylish, but the simplicity of the story doesn't support the elephantine production values that Lean heaped upon it. M-G-M went out on a limb for $15 million on this extravaganza and was lucky it didn't bomb. Mills won an Oscar for his touching portrayal of the town idiot.
