Random Hearts

It won't be sighs of romantic aspirations stemming from the viewer after watching this tired drama -- it will be yawns of incredulity. Ford plays an Internal Affairs officer whose wife dies in an airplane crash. He soon discovers that she was involved in an extramarital affair, with the husband of a congresswoman (Scott Thomas). They two surviving spouses then begin an affair themselves. There's nothing romantic about this story, which mostly consists of Ford dogging Scott Thomas at every turn. And the subplot of Ford investigating a dirty cop goes nowhere. Slightly more interesting is the machinations of Scott Thomas' political campaign, though the small amount of screen time given to it doesn’t make this worthy of anything but complete indifference. Given a smart look by director Pollack, Random Hearts is a cheap gift wrapped in pretty packaging.
