REVIEW
Gere plays Jack, a smug, cocksure lawyer -- the type of guy who's so brilliant and arrogant that you know he's careening towards a serious crisis of conscience and attitude. In the midst of business negotiations with the Chinese government, Jack is arrested for the murder of a dancer he met in a nightclub. Abandoned by his American colleagues, and helpless despite the attempts of the American Embassy, he must try to acquaint himself with the intricacies and brick walls of the Chinese judicial system, and learn to trust the beautiful court-appointed defense advocate (Ling) who has come to his aid. It's difficult to say which is more frustrating: the legal entanglements depicted of the Chinese judicial system, or the predictable plot trajectory of the movie itself. And the romantic subplot between Gere and Chin is a clumsy afterthought at best.
