REVIEW
Evoking the simple yet stirring discovery of first love in a grand cinematic gesture, this sweetly romantic Welsh film was deservedly nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign-Language Film. In a poor Welsh village in 1911, a young coal miner's daughter and a Jewish youth begin a clandestine affair. His faith unbeknownst to her, the lovers attempt to forge a future all the while growing anti-Semitism grips the town. Director Morrison is masterful in capturing the pangs and delights of falling in love, and the two stars have a wonderful chemistry. Though the subplot of culture clash may not resonant with the same intensity, this is nevertheless a gripping, heartfelt examination of a budding, forbidden romance. (Welsh with English subtitles)
