Old-fashioned and sentimental, but not necessarily in the best sense of those words, this romantic tearjerker is long on the sap but does manage to produce a few affecting moments. Gere plays a 40-ish restaurateur and womanizer (successful on both counts) who falls for the 22-year-old daughter (Ryder) of a former girlfriend. Complications arise when he learns she hasn't long to live. Gere and Ryder exhibit little chemistry together, though individually each is satisfactory. The best performance, however, comes from Stritch as Ryder's acerbic grandmother.
