All the good will Keanu created with The Matrix evaporates while watching this near-terrible movie. Reeves plays a disgraced ex-star of the college gridiron, who blew a crucial play in a bowl game. When the pro players go on strike, Reeves and a motley group of stereotypes are called upon to be. . .The Replacements! Or scabs, really -- a political issue this movie sidesteps by making the pros a bunch of disgusting, pampered jackasses. (One wonders what went through the Hollywood union crew's collective mind while making this film.) It's hard not to get a little riled during the Big Game and root for the underdogs, but the road to the game is a rough one: wretched comedy, moronic dialogue, with only the always-professional Hackman to get you by. Even the football footage is unimpressive.
