Marooned on a seemingly lifeless planet, a group of desperate passengers turn to a convicted murderer for help when they discover that the planet is inhabited by an army of deadly alien creatures. Good special effects, better-than-average action scenes and a nice sense of atmosphere go a long way to compensate for a familiar story line and stock characters. Pitch Black may be derivative, and you may know every film from which its borrowing, but it's also a lot of fun, something few sci-fi films have been recently. (Sequel: The Chronicles of Riddick)
