REVIEW
Set in County Cork, Ireland, in 1920, this sumptuous though uninspiring adaptation of Elizabeth Brown's novel traces the end of an era for the aristocratic Anglo-Irish Naylor family, and, in effect, the end of Anglo-Irish aristocracy in Ireland. The fight for Irish independence arrives on the Naylor's front door when their young daughter is torn between a British soldier and a freedom fighter in hiding. The good ensemble (especially Shaw) helps keep interest but the film lacks full dramatic tension and only intermittently is able to keep pace with its ambitious story.
