Ushering in the neo-noir wave of the '70s, Get Carter saw the future and it was bleak. The devastatingly suave Caine plays Jack Carter, a magnetic gangster with a pervasive mean streak. He heads to grimy Newcastle to track down his brother's murderer. Using intimidation (for men) and seduction (for the ladies), he gets answers and issues judgment, but revenge is rarely satisfying. Hodges provides a quiet visual flair, putting the camera right where it traditionally shouldn't be, picking up other characters and some essential mood in the process. (Remade in 1971 as Hit Man and in 2000 as Get Carter)
