REVIEW
Gay activists, in response to the drivel that gays actually choose their lifestyles, often quote the line, "Who would want to be gay in a homophobic society?" Three to Tango, comic drivel of nearly epic proportions, attempts to show the who, what, where and why of "who." Perry plays an architect whose zillionaire client (McDermott) thinks he's gay (but he's not), so Perry's asked to keep on eye on the mogul's "wild" girlfriend (Campbell). Think they eventually fall in love? This probably would have been funny if it was made in the 1970s; but alas, New Queer Cinema has flourished since then but you would never know it by the stereotypes and hoary comic situations that are dusted off and presented for our displeasure. It's a shame, too. Perry gives it his all. He has good screen presence, and a lot of comic energy -- it's mostly wasted with the silly stuff he's been given to do. In trying to be both cutting and P.C., Three to Tango suffocates and becomes unfunny and just a little offensive.
