Another autobiographical, Baltimore-based Levinson film (in the spirit of Diner and Avalon), which is where his strengths lie. Brody and Foster play Jewish boys growing up in 1950s Baltimore, standing up to the anti-Semitic (and racist, snobby) community while discovering cross-cultural romance. Mantegna plays their father, who balances his time between the burlesque house he runs and a gambling operation. Plenty of smart comedy within a touching, serious framework.
