This fantastic assault on the senses is one of Russell's best films. In his first starring role, Hurt portrays an inquisitive scientist who experiments with powerful mind-altering drugs in a quest for his primal self. Gradually, he undergoes a series of mental and physical transformations and experiences some spine-chilling hallucinations. Paddy Chayefsky's novel is brought to life with the help of some shocking, state-of-the-art special effects. And though Chayefsky disowned the film, and had his name removed, this is nevertheless an unforgettable film experience. Haid is terrific as one of Hurt's disbelieving colleagues.
