Ameche's subtle yet complex portrait of an Italian shoe repairman caught in a high stakes impersonation of a Mafia don is a delight. Writer-director Mamet's social comedy does not deliver the visceral thrills of his previous film, House of Games, but nonetheless is a sly comedy which explores the honor among thieves and the deadly temptations that money and power offer. The always fascinating Mantegna is a low-level hood who is responsible for the weekend safety of Ameche. But what starts as a simple job of baby-sitting, ends in a comedy of errors as the reticent Ameche is mistaken for a Mafia kingpin. A thinking person's comedy and one that is highly recommended.
