Russell's powerful rendition of the D.H. Lawrence classic centers on two Midlands sisters and the tempestuous relationships they form. Resolute Gudren (Jackson) becomes involved with the strong but boorish Gerald (Reed), while her romantically inclined sister Ursula (Linden) falls in love with the handsome but aloof Rupert (Bates). A masterful examination of sexual domination and repression, brilliantly portrayed by its cast -- Jackson won an Oscar and international stardom for her gutsy, complex portrayal of Gudren.
