The film version of Bernhard's audacious off-Broadway hit brims with libidinous wit and inventive characterizations. With unabashed artistic daring, Bernhard plunges into a melange of musical impersonations, poetry readings and monologues which put her on the cutting edge of standup comedy/performance art. Set in a sleepy little nightclub, Bernhard's act is played to a thinning and impassive-looking audience and culminates in a desperate and very revealing go-go dance to the tune of Prince's "Little Red Corvette." Sprinkled with moments of inspired comedic brilliance, Without You... establishes Bernhard as a hip, thoroughly campy urban (and urbane) satirist.
