Joseph Dougherty, writer of HBO's highly entertaining Cast a Deadly Spell, teams up with director Schrader for this whimsical sequel. Set in Hollywood in the 1940s where the art of witchcraft runs rampant, the story follows the adventures of private dick H. Phillip Lovecraft (Hopper), who is hired by a beautiful femme fatale (Ann Miller) to keep a watchful eye on her philandering husband. Lovecraft, who doesn't engage in magic himself, soon comes up against a right-wing, McCarthy-like activist (Bogosian) out to destroy witches once and for all. Great special effects spice up this comical, noir-esque feature, whose sets are designed to create a dreamlike Hollywood where almost anything could happen -- even the fetching of Shakespeare to write new scripts.
