REVIEW
They say that fame is fleeting, and in this invigorating drama starring O'Toole (in the familiar role of a boozy Hollywood star), fame's disappearance holds more significance than just losing a good table at Spago's. When Valentin (O'Toole) is killed by what seems like a lunatic fan (Firth), who is then bumped off by a falling spotlight, both victims find themselves in a slightly puzzling hereafter. The island paradise, which at first seems like a green version of heaven, turns out to be inhabited only by those who are dead and famous. When one's fame on Earth disappears, however, so does one's reservations at the island's swank hotel. Resting somewhere in that amorphous gap between comedy and drama, this little "slice of life" (slice of death?) offers a devilishly ponderous glimpse into the great beyond.
