REVIEW
A deeply moving and hauntingly beautiful affirmation of the human spirit. Sumptuously photographed in both black and white and color, the film reveals the world as seen by two angels (Ganz, Sander). As they hover over Berlin and listen to the lonely thoughts whispering through the minds of the disenfranchised and forgotten, we are mesmerized by their inherent compassion for humanity. Finally for Ganz's angel, this compassion turns to desire as he feels himself longing to experience the complexities of human emotions. Dommartin is stunning as the trapeze artist whose beauty inspires Ganz to yearn for an earthbound existence. (Sequel: Far Away, So Close) (American remake: City of Angels) (German with English subtitles)
