SKINOPSISFry makes for an uncannily realistic Oscar Wilde in this sumptuous biopic about the famed 19th-century Irish-born playwright. Director Gilbert's lavishly made film explores Wilde's unconventional lifestyle in Victorian England by tracing his life as family man who slowly succumbs to "the love that dare not speak its name" -- one that ultimately leads to his trial and imprisonment. Much of Wilde is devoted to Oscar's strained love affair with Bosie (Law), the rich young man who casts a spell over him, and whose father (Wilkinson) wants to put an end to their relationship. While the scenes between Oscar and Bosie show how Wilde comes to accept who he is, episodes in his life depicting his trial, his love for his children, as well as his success as a literary figure flesh out this intimate portrait. In the title role, Fry embodies Wilde, playing him with appropriate wit and panache. A fascinating drama, beautifully filmed, Wilde is worthwhile.
