REVIEW
Hill's attempt to de-mythologize the legendary gunfighter and marshal is a superficial account of his last days, with a few interesting flashbacks thrown in for good measure. Bridges, though, is exceptional as the titular antihero, who comes to the town of Deadwood hoping to spend some quiet days and enjoy the status of living legend. Several vengeance-seeking characters have also come to Deadwood, providing the film with numerous showdowns. Barkin is a larger-than-life Calamity Jane who wants to rekindle a relationship with Bill. Hill seems to be trying to attain the level of The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance in its deconstruction of a hero. He falls short of the mark, but does manage to present a generally tedious but somewhat entertaining character study of a character we really don't get to know. You Might Also Like
