We're No Angels (1989)

The idea of De Niro and Penn costarring in a remake of the 1955 Humphrey Bogart comedy We're No Angels, and having it written by David Mamet, must have looked great on paper. So what happened? This is a painfully unfunny comedy with De Niro and Penn as prison escapees who masquerade as priests to elude a search party. The film captures none of the spirit of playfulness which made the original so entertaining: this version is a heavy-handed misconception and strictly for fans of the two stars.
