REVIEW
This thought-provoking sexual odyssey tells the story of a young West German woman and her search for "romantic love." Frustrated by the emptiness and the emotional morass of her native Hamburg, Dorothee decides to flee her home to search for her mother, who is living in San Francisco. Once arrived, however, her trek turns into a process of sexual discovery. Filmed in a steamy black and white, the film exudes a sensuality in which simple lust is transformed into glorious eroticism. While The Virgin Machine is clearly a feminist film about a woman's exploration of her own sexuality, its profound statement is one which applies to all. (English and German with English subtitles)
