FROM THE LINER NOTESA critically acclaimed biography of the artist Vincent Van Gogh, played by Jacques Dutronc, focusing mainly on the final months of his life when he painted some of his most beautiful and famous paintings while navigating the complex relationships with his brother and his patron's daughter.
REVIEW
Unlike previous visions of the artist -- Vincente Minnelli's Lust for Life, Robert Altman's Vincent and Theo or Paul Cox's documentary Vincent -- this beautifully photographed look at Van Gogh's last days in Auvers-Sur-Oise eschews the standard portrait of a tortured soul. Instead we see a man who lusts after women, enjoys life's pleasures and who, in the end, may have taken his own life more out of remorse over his own sensitivities than his failure to gain acceptance. Dutronc won a César Award for Best Actor for his understated portrayal. (French with English subtitles) Editor's Suggestions
