From the director of the provocative The Vanishing comes this elegant, spare and quietly involving drama. Filmed in English, the story focuses on Baron von Utz (Mueller-Stahl), a wealthy Czechoslavakian collector of German porcelain figurines. Through a series of flashbacks, we learn of the roots of his lifelong obsession with his collection as well as his mysterious life. Riegert is an international antique broker who befriends him in the hope of obtaining the collection after his death and Fricker is his more-than-an-employee housekeeper. Beautiful locales in Prague provide an exotic backdrop to the gentle character study.
