REVIEW
The crusading reporter is alive and well and doing good once more in Eastwood's solid drama of redemption and justice. Clint plays Steve Everett, an ex-alcoholic investigative reporter who's just inherited an assignment to cover that evening's execution of a death-row inmate. Upon examining the facts, he soon suspects that the man, Frank Beachum (Washington), may be innocent. Like James Stewart's reporter in Call Northside 777, Everett is prepared to do what's needed to save an innocent man before it's too late. Clint fans shouldn’t worry -- he hasn't turned into a simpy do-gooder. It's just the womanizing, bottom-line Everett trusts his instincts, especially when the truth is involved. Director Eastwood maintains a tight grip on the action throughout, and as the final hour approaches, True Crime becomes downright suspenseful. Washington soulfully conveys inner turmoil and righteousness, and Woods nearly steals the film with his sly turn as Everett's sardonic editor.
