Kidman offers a scintillating performance in this stylish and hilarious social satire that attacks America's media-obsession with razor-sharp precision. Kidman is a model of icy effervescence as Suzanne Stone, a small-town New Hampshire girl who is determined to make a name in television, at any cost. Working at the local cable station, she begins a video documentary about the wasted lives of three local teens, including a perfectly cast Pheonix as her unlikely paramour. When her husband (Dillon) begins making demands for marital bliss, Suzanne, determined to stay the course, enlists the youths to help rid her of her domestic distraction. Based in part on a real incident, Buck Henry's masterful script finds itself in good hands with Van Sant. Douglas is captivating in support as Dillon's sister, who also acts to some degree as the film's Greek chorus.
