10 Things I Hate about You

Extremely loose adaptation of "The Taming of the Shrew," with teens, high school, and, of course, a climactic prom. Frighteningly overprotective dad Miller won't let his popular daughter Oleynik go to the prom unless his unpopular shrew daughter Stiles goes too. She is conned into a date with outcast Ledger, then finds out about a wager about the date, but he's fallen for her… oh, why bother explaining? It's an old, predictable story (seen most recently in She's All That) but it has equal parts charm and bile, making it hard not to get swept up. Fun performances by all the kids make this a diverting treat, even if the writers can't tell Shakespeare from Elizabeth Barret Browning ("How do I love thee? Let me count the ways").
