Temptation of a Monk

While stylishly filmed, this tale of a betrayed general who must seek refuge in a temple is slow-moving and confusing. Chen stars as the siren princess who tempts a general of a royal family's army as he tries to atone for his errors in being accused a traitor. Lavish costumes, open landscapes and period music abound. The actors leave a good impression on a poorly written script. Though director Law has exhibited a fine edge with her prior works, she is unable to overcome a taxing story line and laborious characters in this well-intentioned but misguided effort.
