REVIEW
Blake stars as Willie Boy, an American Indian who becomes the object of a massive hunting party and a political scapegoat during the early 1900s. Set in the arid deserts of Southern California, the film begins with a drunken pool room fight involving Willie Boy and a white patron. From there, events start to snowball as Willie Boy kills the father of his girlfriend (a tanned Ross), and the two go on the run with a disinterested sheriff (Redford) and a blood-thirsty posse on their trail. Director Polonsky -- whose first feature this was since being blackballed during the McCarthy witch-hunts -- sets an ominous tone as he effectively tells a tale of injustice and hysteria and juxtaposes it with an exciting chase story.
