Italian director Ferreri provokes every reaction but boredom, and with a scenario launched from the sordid musings of cult poet Charles Bukowski, he has perhaps found the vehicle best suited for his iconoclastic style. A grizzled Gazzara is the derelict author stumbling through adventures in a sickeningly sun-drenched L.A. The tauntingly beautiful Muti adds a new dimension to screen masochism.
