REVIEW
Genius, lover, sexist, bully, egotist, artist: these and other identifying traits of legendary painter Pablo Picasso are perfectly brought to life by Hopkins. But his riveting portrayal is not quite enough to overcome director Ivory's static account of the final years of the artist's life and his love affairs. Suggested by the novel "Picasso: Creator and Destroyer," Surviving Picasso is narrated by Picasso's longtime lover Francoise Gilot (nicely played by McElhone), mother to two of his children. The film almost ignores Picasso the artist in favor of his relationships with Gilot and others. That Picasso is possibly defined by his treatment of his mistresses and wife doesn't necessarily make for an articulate, clearer vision. But as was probably true in real life, Hopkins makes sure that Picasso is always center stage and cognizant of his place in the world.
