REVIEW
Yet another "Saturday Night Live" skit unwisely stretched out to ninety minutes, Superstar leaves the talented Shannon and Ferrell stranded and flailing. The story has Shannon's popular SNL character, Mary Catherine Gallagher -- the accident-prone Catholic high school girl who sniffs her pits when she's nervous -- pining for two things: a kiss from school stud Ferrell and superstardom. While there are a handful of amusing moments (an impromptu cafeteria dance number, Shannon's audition for the school talent show), Superstar is mostly a downbeat experience. Scenes of a miserable, lonely Mary Catherine French-kissing a tree or being mocked by the entire school are more depressing than funny, and McCulloch (of "Kids in the Hall") directs with little inspiration or style. Could've been a decent short, but at 90 minutes, it's interminable. You Might Also Like
