REVIEW
So this is what Skid Row feels like. First-time director Nossiter pushes us closer than feels comfortable to the lower depths in this haunting and disturbing look at a case of mistaken identity that brings two hapless souls together. It is Sunday. For Oliver (Suchet), it's the most depressing day -- "a day of nothingness." He leaves his men's shelter environs and sets out to wander the streets of Queens, when suddenly a beautiful woman spots him and shouts, "Matthew!" Mistaking him for a film director, Madeleine (Harrow) rushes over to renew their acquaintance and thus begins a certainly less-than-ordinary Sunday for them both. Nossiter, who coscripted the film, unfolds the details of these two unlucky lives with striking clarity while making great use of the Queens locales. Suchet and Harrow are both excellent and, though the film does have a few dead spots, their stirring portrayals of these drifting, joyless souls are riveting.
