Summer Fling

Yet another bland comedy-drama about those quirky Irish. This one gets another mark on the trendy check list for taking place in the '70s. An affable but underachieving, slightly withdrawn lad (Leto) spends the summer before starting college avoiding work, looking for girls and sweating the results of his senior finals. His wacky, eccentric family, led by flamboyant stage actor Da (Byrne) and raging stereotype, scream-at-ya-cuz-I-love-ya Ma (O'Hara), drive him batty, while a visiting American girl arrives to flirt with him. Aside from appealing performances and the luscious countryside, there's little to recommend Summer Fling to older viewers, though if you can get past the clichéd characters and blah story, there are a few stylish moments.
