REVIEW
A feeble rock 'n' roll fable, The Suburbans is an alleged comedy about an '80s one-hit wonder band trying to make a comeback eighteen years later. Cowritten, directed by, and starring Ward (who proved he had talent in My Life Is in Turnaround), the film fails on all three counts as the jokes are unfunny, the staging is uninspired, and most of the cast mimics Ward's wry deadpan delivery to ill effect. What is more, cameos by Dick Clark and Kurt Loder, as well as Ben and Jerry Stiller are wasted. Hewitt stars an a record exec trying to generate interest in a now middle-aged pop band. As hard as it is for her to generate interest in The Suburbans the band, it is equally hard to find anything of interest in The Suburbans the movie. The best contribution comes from Brenneman who plays Ward's long-suffering love interest.
