Well-acted drama about a young farm girl's coming of age when she runs away from home to live with her estranged mother in the city. Ryder gives a superb performance as the young girl, as does Alexander as her mom, and Robards as her grandfather. Lowe gives a surprisingly effective portrayal of a young retarded man.
