FROM THE LINER NOTES

Laura Dern gave the performance of a lifetime in this acclaimed coming-of-age indie, and put the world on notice that she wasn't content to coast on her parents' coattails.

3 REASONS TO BUY THIS FILM

  • Among Roger Ebert's other praises, he said "the movie is almost uncanny in its self-assurance."
  • If you've only seen Laura Dern in her more recent work, you'll be astonished to see her as a teenager.
  • It's assumed that Sex, Lies & Videotape launched Sundance, but films like this and Blood Simple put it on the map first.
REVIEW
Based on Joyce Carol Oates' short story "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been," this compelling, gutsy coming-of-age drama explores a 15-year-old California girl's sexual awakening. Dern is excellent as the budding teen, and Williams exudes charm and malevolence as her seducer.
